Every fashionable beach destination needs a landmark piece of art, and Bal Harbour, Florida is about to get one dedicated to a barefoot mailman. Yep, you read that right.
"Self Portrait As a Barefoot Mailman" by Christy Gast is the second installation in the public art program Unscripted, spearheaded by curator Claire Breukul. Launching in March, Gast's statue will stand 12-feet tall, a self portrait wedged head-first into the grown as if blown-over. It will pay homage to the area's famous barefoot mailman, a real historical figure who carried mail from Palm Beach to Miami in the 1880s before major roads were constructed in the region.
Gast's sculpture will replace the current installations "Americana" and "Levittown House" by George Sanchez-Calderon.
