For a California surfer, Malibu isn't the symbol of affluence and high society the rest of the world associates with the coastal town. Instead, one familiar with the pointbreak follows Pacific Coast Highway, traversing through side streets with a board in tow in hopes that their favorite spot is clear and the waves are as perfect as one remembers them.

For that same surfer, it comes as no surprise that Malibu's Surfrider Beach is being declared the first international Surfing Reserve by the Save the Waves Coalition, in partnership with National Surfing Reserves Australia and the International Surfing Association.

Hand-in-hand with the title comes a protective shield that will ensure the natural and cultural heritage of the beach is preserved. To celebrate, there will be a ceremonial paddle-out on October 9th, followed by a fundraiser. It is a great honor to have a main-land beach head up a preservation effort that will soon include other iconic beaches in Hawaii and Australia. Save the Waves!
