Pret-A-Surf

“Ready-to-wear and ready-to-surf” is how Pret-A-Surf designers Karen Mulligan and Jill Demling describe their new line of swim and surf apparel, designed to take the wearer from the waves to the street in one fell swoop. Pret-A-Surf’s Mondrian-inspired, red, white, and blue rash guard and black and white gingham, vintage-cut two-piece will lure anyone into the water (wipeout not included).

When did both of you first learn to surf?
KM: I learned to surf on the North Shore of Kauai in Halalei Bay. From my first lesson eight years ago, I was hooked.
JD: I learned to surf in Manuel Antonio in Costa Rica when Karen and a group of friends went on a surf trip for New Years.

Where do you go when you are trying to find inspiration?
We have lots of research - from vintage textiles found at flea markets, yard sales - to photography and art books - surf books - books on fashion. Vintage fashion and surf photographs of the 50s and 60s are our inspiration.
What items are essentials in your own beach bag?
Dr Colbert's "surfer's" UV defense sunscreen, Chantecaille Pure Rosewater, Chantecaille Protection Naturelle, KBL aviators, Rodin Lip Balm, Pret-a-Surf rash guard and shorts, Kadima, Kerastase Chroma Rich hair serum, always a good book and always our blackberrys.
Sum up the concepts behind your latest line in three words.
Form, Fashion and Function
Can we hope for your line to be carried in any more West Coast stores in the near future?
